How much storage unit space do I really need? Kangaroo Self Storage

No matter where you are in your life journey, a self-storage unit provides a list of benefits. Whether you’re moving into a smaller place, selling most of your belongings and moving to a foreign country, expanding your family, or even being deployed for a tour of duty, storage units help keep your belongings and organized until you move them to in your home.

There are two essential factors when shopping for a storage unit to fit your needs. The storage unit size and how you organize the unit go hand-in-hand for a smooth move. At Kangaroo Self Storage, we offer two primary sizes, 10X10 and 20X10.

Both unit sizes are great depending on what you need. We’ve broken down how much each unit will hold and how to optimize your unit to conserve as much space as possible.

10X10 Storage Unit

A 10X10 storage unit is approximately half the size of a one car garage. What can you store in a 10X10 storage unit? Depending on how many belongings you’re looking to storage, a 10X10 unit stores an entire family room or two full bedrooms worth of things.

Self-storage tips for a 10X10 storage unit

Storing your belongings in a 10X10 storage unit is straight forward as long as you have a proper idea as to where each item goes to make the most of your space.

  • Use strong storage boxes or heavy duty plastic boxes to store your belongings. The stronger the boxes, the easier transporting them will be when you move in and out of the unit.
  • Stack your boxes no more than four feet high. Stacking your boxes at a low height makes retreiveing the boxes simpler and less stressful.
  • Place your larger boxes near the top of the unit. Be sure to place your larger items such as lamps and tables near the bottom of the unit and your smaller items stacked on the top. This way, you’re able to access the smaller items without the stacks of boxes tumbling down during your move.

20X10 Storage Unit

20X10 storage units allow you to store more belongings. Your storage space in a 20X10 storage unit equates to a full-sized one car garage.

What can you fit in a 20X10 storage unit?

Upgrading to a 10X20 unit allows you to store items from multiple bedrooms, couch, refrigerator, stove, and other large kitchen appliances. Why would you need a storage unit this big? If you’re remodeling a new home that’s not “move-in ready”, a 20X10 would be a great fit. Also, if you’re moving to a new home and need a temporary place to safely store your kitchen appliances and other large home items.

When you begin to fill your 20X10 storage unit, consider placing your larger items near the rear of the unit. Place smaller items near the front for easy access.  Incorporating freestanding shelves positioned near the back or side of the unit helps keep your boxes organized when you need to grab an item quickly. Organizing each shelf by room also makes moving lightning fast and simple.
